How to Stay Private on Dating Apps
A step-by-step guide to protecting your privacy on dating and hookup apps: location, photos, personal details and the settings that matter.
Step 1: Check how the app handles your location
Location is the most sensitive thing a dating app holds. Before anything else, find out whether the app shows your exact position or an approximate area. HUNTR rounds your location to about half a mile before it's saved, and other members only ever see a rough distance — never a pin on your street.
Step 2: Decide how much profile you actually need
You don't owe an app a full biography. On HUNTR every profile field is optional — no photo, no name, no stats required. A blank profile still appears in Discover as 'New member', so you can look around before you share anything.
Step 3: Separate public and private photos
Keep face photos out of your public profile if you prefer. HUNTR's private albums let you share up to 15 photos or videos with specific members you choose, instead of broadcasting them to everyone nearby.
Step 4: Control who can find you
Use block liberally — on HUNTR, blocked members vanish from each other completely. Reports are private: the moderation team sees them, the reported person never learns who sent it.
Step 5: Watch what you say in chat
Avoid sharing your home address, workplace or financial details in messages. If someone pushes for personal information quickly, that's a warning sign — slow down or block.
Step 6: Review your footprint regularly
Every few months, check what your profile shows, which photos are public, and whether you still want your account. HUNTR lets you delete your account and its data from Settings.
